Short summary
This study suggests that the dominant periodicity of precipitation shifted from eccentricity-scale (~100–125-kyr) variability to 20-kyr precessional variability during the Late Pliocene, implying that the processes controlling the westward penetration of summer moisture into the basin varied under different background climate states. These findings provide new insight into how background climate conditions may shape the orbital-scale response of precipitation during warm periods.
