Visible stratigraphic dating was attempted on all core processed
at the National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) by investigators from
Penn State directed by R.B. Alley (independent visible dating of
some core by A.J. Gow and D. Meese of CRREL
should be reported independently by them).  Core was examined on
a light table over fluorescent tubes (two different light tables,
supplied by NICL, were used; the better one with three bulbs 
controlled by independent switches was reserved for Gow
and Meese, but after their work, we switched and used it).  
Visible examination occurred after the core had been sectioned 
longitudinally and samples removed for isotopic, chemical, etc. 
analyses, and after the surface had been smoothed using a planer and
then sampled electrically by Kendrick Taylor and collaborators.  
All core sections were transferred to core trays of clear plastic
designed and built by NICL, which have a curved cross-sectional aspect
that conforms closely to the exterior of the core.  

Major stratigraphic features were noted on meter-long graph paper, which
is stored at Penn State.  We typically noted coarse-grained and 
fine-grained firn at shallow depths, and coarse-bubbled and fine-bubbled
ice at greater depth; if we observed a contrast in appearance but could
not make a grain-size or bubble-size determination, we noted light or 
dark appearance in transmitted light.  We chose summers based on 
coarse-grained or coarse-bubbled, and on the occurrence of rapid oscillation
in appearance as opposed to more homogeneous appearance.  We "forced"
stratigraphy; even if the answer was not obvious, we made choices anyway.
We use a quality indicator to tell how obvious the choices were: 3=clear
indication, 2=fair indication, 1=poor indication, 0.5=something present
but not picked as a summer, 0=interpolated where visible examination too
difficult for choices (as in badly fractured or wafered core).

Melt layers were identified as bubble-free or nearly-bubble-free zones.
Ambiguity is introduced by crusts, which are thin (approximately 1 mm thick), 
typically nearly uniform in thickness, and possibly polygenetic (sun, drizzle,
wind packing, etc.).  Crusts may occur in non-summer snow.  To avoid crusts,
we required that melt features be 2 mm thick or more.  Ideally, they also
show irregularity in thickness as well; in practice, thick features almost
always do.  Confidence: 0.5 indicates possible melt, but not both convincing
and likely to be recognizable after >50% strain thinning; 0.75 indicates
probable melt, count in most applications; 1=melt, little or no doubt.

B-I and UpC were 4" diameter; core A was reduced from a much larger sample.  
The sample supplied for visible stratigraphy varied in thickness for some
of the cores, owing to changes in samples removed previously for other
analyses; details on cut plans are available from the Science Coordination
Office.  In very rare instances (marked on the core cards), the surface
was wiped with ethanol to improve visibility.  In very rare instances,
we used a microtome knife to shave a little of the back or side surface
to improve visibility.

Several intercomparisons were attempted among Penn State observers, in
which independent measurements were taken and only later compared.  
A selection of those is listed here.  The first two columns give 
observations by Alley, together with confidence.  The next two give
observations by a student.  The 0.5 confidence level means 
"I agonized over this one, there may be a year here, but I wouldn't
count it".  The single 0 confidence is for a summer in a break in the
core; I picked it, and the student said he couldn't see clearly but
thought there was one there.  In this set, I counted 75 years and
the students counted 71; weighting them the same, this comes out to a
difference of about 5%.  We are hopeful that absolute accuracy is 
10% or better.
